Vickie Pierre

What Keeps Me, Binds Me, 2019

On Loan

Vickie Pierre is a prominent Haitian-American multimedia artist whose dynamic practice spans painting, collage, works on paper, and complex 3D mixed-media installations. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Pierre received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in 1997 before establishing her studio practice in South Florida.

Pierre’s creative methodology is deeply informed by personal and collective memory, fantasy, surrealism, and the ornamental arts. Her layered compositions and assemblages often incorporate diverse, mass-produced home decor items and gender-loaded collectibles—ranging from vintage Avon perfume bottles to glitter, textiles, and decorative wallpaper. Through these vibrant and tactile materials, she constructs a whimsical yet subversive visual language that deconstructs European interior design tropes. Her imagery explores themes of psychological interiority, femininity, mythologies (including Yoruba and Haitian folklore), and the complex cultural politics defining the Black diasporic experience.

Her work, including What Keeps Me, Binds Me (2019), has been showcased in institutions like the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Bass Museum of Art, and the U.S. Embassy in Prague, alongside honors such as the South Florida Cultural Consortium Award.
